30th Anniversary Poster: Tonight at 8:30

Tonight at 8:30 was an ambitious and elegant affair at Antaeus, when we produced ten of Noël Coward's one-acts over two evenings in 2007.

Sophistication, wit, music and elegance, champagne and dancing … everything you’d expect from Noël Coward. Written as a vehicle for Coward’s own acting talents alongside his frequent stage partner Gertrude Lawrence, Tonight at 8:30 is Coward’s ambitious series of ten one-act plays which saw him breathe new life into the one-act form. First performed in London in 1936, the plays perfectly showcase Coward’s talents as a playwright, providing a sparkling, fast-paced and remarkably varied selection of theatrical gem.

Remembering: Tonight at 8:30

  • “Unlike the single three-piece subsets in which the works are typically revived, this undertaking spans two evenings … more than 40 actors appear in the cycle, most in multiple roles. … insightful handling of overall tone, pacing and emotional impact.” —Philip Brandes, Los Angeles Times
  • “Critic’s Pick … A masterful remounting — a logistic and aesthetic marvel — of a neglected work. It’s a joy to see the company’s versatile thespians savor multiple delicious roles. … Antaeus does itself proud with this artful and thoroughly captivating repertory series.” —Les Spindle, Backstage
  • “It takes a troupe with a deep appreciation of theatrical history and no lack of ambition to do the show justice, and the Antaeus Company has stepped up with an outstanding production.”—Terry Morgan on “Part I – If Love Were All,” Daily Variety
  • “Four directors elicit superb work from an (double-cast) excellent ensemble … perfect pacing and lively staging.” —Terry Morgan on “Part II – Come the Wild,” Daily Variety

Creating the Poster:

As this particular play has multiple chapters each with their own independent stories, I focused to capture the mood and visualize emotions rather than illustrate in narrative. I took the 1930s Art Deco aesthetics with sophisticated yet simple approach.
