the transformative power of live theater

“What’s Past Is Prologue”

A Message From Co-Artistic Director John Sloan

Now in its second year, the Antaeus Playwrights Lab is an exciting new addition to our community and a perfect fit with the Antaeus tradition of deep exploration of texts in the process of making great theatre. With weekly gatherings in the library in which ensemble members read aloud from works in progress followed by discussion, the Lab has become a space of exploration, growth, and enrichment for playwrights and actors alike, all with one simple goal: the creation of new classics for the theatre.

“The Antaeus Playwrights Lab has become a cherished touchstone in my artistic life. As a playwright it is such a gift to be with the incredibly talented and generous Antaeus actors as they bring first drafts to life. The listening in the room is the kind of support every artist requires when sharing our work at the most vulnerable stage. I wrote my latest play, The Madres, in a flurry last February and being able to bring those early pages into Lab and hear them read and listen to the smart commentary helped me so much. That play is now a finalist for the Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize. That Antaeus supports new plays and current Los Angeles playwrights in such a concrete way is a tremendous gift. I treasure this community.” —Stephanie Alison Walker, Playwright

Join us in February for the second annual ten-minute play festival, Classic Redux, featuring new ten-minute plays inspired by something “classic”: a play, a character, a piece of music…all performed by members of the Antaeus ensemble. Click here for the latest information.
